Actually agree with over-engineered robots, some looked complex for the sake of looking complex "ooh wow look at the detail". er yeah, but what's the point - how is that realistically functional?

Its funny you should mention Iron Man, its one I was going to mention in my last post. It had to have a sense of humour (though this may be partly down to Robert Downey Jr) maybe because it was trying to establish an essentially new character in the public imagination and...

I think the problem was more to do with following the action scenes as opposed to the plot (which was wafer thin). All the robots look the same, over-engineered, over-powered, but hopeless at actually killing anyone (get some Rambo style destruction and we're back in business).

And I don't have a problem with non-serious films. A recent example would be Iron Man which I loved. Transformers just felt pointless and repetitive. Each to his own, but I just don't see its...

I understand the frustration with praising good SFX and doubting whether it deserves appreciation on that basis. Is the point that modern good SFX are not requiring of a great deal of talent/money perhaps?

If my taste in films can be said to be at all consistent, then the key for me was "it doesn't take itself seriously". If a film takes itself seriously it better be high quality. With hindsight it reminds me a lot of Japanese mecha/robot anime (Neon Genesis, Gundam,...

I have to say I didn't have any difficulty following what was going on plot wise or robot wise.

Also, transformers is not a serious film. it's not going to win any awards, oscars, whatever. this was evident in the script. it is very tongue in cheek and full of cheesy humour some of which was actually quite funny. it doesn't take itself seriously and shouldn't in my view be judged on the same basis as a serious film. it's supposed to be entertainment. if you go to...

I haven't yet seen Revenge of the Fallen, but just about the only good thing in the first film (other than Megan Fox's backside) was the effects. Admittedly, you couldn't tell what was going on, but I think that owes more to poor direction. Industrial Light and Magic never cease to amaze.

I'm just disappointed tbh, i loved the toys and stuff as a kid and the films are really bad and like you say there was no more than 10 minutes of anything resembling a good film. Geeky comic book type films can be done well, transformers wern't. However if there was a 3rd one I'd see it as a) i have a cine card...

Arrggghhh. Good FX is meaningless (go to an art gallery instead - not that I would), and I didn't think they were that good anyway. Didn't have a clue what was going on. And I wasn't interested for more than 10 mins (i.e. after the trailers ended). Some people on this forum have unpredictable tastes.

Just thinking given this why you bothered seeing Transformers 2... also, you can say it....

I liked Transformers 2. I wouldn't go as far as PC, it'll never be one of the best films ever. But it did have good FX, a sense of humour, a coherent plot, characters vaguely interesting and while it was long I was never bored for more than ten minutes. I had a little look at Rate 08 to see if it really is worse than anything you've seen for a good few years and wondered if perhaps you've erased Speed Racer, Hellboy 2 and Death Race from your mind?

I love how Currie says tf2 is one of the best films ever and we thought it was utter crap! My mate chris said the same as currie though...I couldnt wait for it to end and had I not been in the imax I'd have walked out. Worse than anything I've seen for a good few years, the only good points about the film were megan fox's slow motion boobs

Nero's motives were a bit lame but are in keeping with the sci-fi genre. He could have warned himself I suppose but he did say 25 years if waiting made him a bit crazy. I actually disliked the fact kirk landed close to old Spock on the icy moon but those kind of coincidences happen in most films. I liked the comedy examples you mentioned. Obviously the best line was "out of the chair" and I didn't like scottys helped. Too jar jar binks for me.

I hope that's not true. I go into every film wanting to give it 5. I'm not saying a film has to be perfect (if there is such a thing), but it has to be something special. When I leave the cinema knowing I could sit through the whole thing again immediately, that's 5 stars. When I buy it on DVD and can watch scenes over and over without ever getting bored, that's five stars. Such films do exist, but they're few and far between.
