I've suggested this idea to a few people and received a generally favourable response. What do people think about reviving the Champions League?
Unlike the Cup, it would be run independently from from the Premiership, with separate squads. It would begin at the Group Phase of the competition. Furthermore, only the top 4 in the Premiership each year would qualify.
On the points front, the workload would be much less than that of the Premiership, with only 4 competitors and 13 match days. It would give everyone something extra to play for and give rise to the possibility of a unique treble of Premiership, Cup and Champions League.
One point of contention might be the initial bidding. The 3rd Qualifying Round finishes in late August (23rd this year). Thus, if we were to hold the bidding at the annual session we would not know the complete field. This should'nt be a major problem, however.
I think this could become a hugely presitgious tournament and there would, of course, be a trophy. Thoughts?
