Gentlemen, I give to you my first and final annual WFFLY awards. Victory speeches welcome, and requests for new awards considered.
Worst Week of 2008
Winner: Paul Currie
Paul's sensational final week of the 07/08 season saw him lose 2nd place.
Best Week 2008
Winner: Matthew Temple
Too many weeks to identify one in particular, but week 19 of the 07/08 season cemented the title for Matt.
Worst Buy 2008
Winner: Darrell Whitehead
Cesc Fabregas at 8m+ this year severely compromised Darrell's chances in 08/09 and Cesc's performances havent rescued this over-spend.
Best Buy 2008
Winner: Matthew Temple
Cristiano Ronaldo in 07/08 at 17m could lay claim to this title, but Ashley Young at 2.9m in 08/09 is unbelieveable value.
Unlucky Purchase 2008
Winner: Ruwan Samarasekara
Ruwan put all his eggs in an 18.5m Fernando Torres basket in 08/09 and has been compromised by his injuries. Had he been fit Ruwan would have been right up there.
Under-acheiver 2008
Winner: Vivek Paul
Usually the winner of WFFL, a poor 07/08 and less than convincing current standing in 08/09 indicates a worrying lack of form. A tight contest between Vivek and Stuart Oxton for this award but Vivek's higher credentials make the slump more alarming.
Over-achiever 2008
Winner: Darrell Whitehead
Consistent performances despite the loss of 50 points for lazyness.
Commitment 2008
Winner: Stuart Oxton
Chief organiser of IBS 08/09, joint chief contributor to the points and all this despite wavering interest. Commited to not letting it all fall on its arse for some reason.
Deal of the year 2008
Winner: Paul Currie
Paul wins this award on the basis of quantity rather than neccasarily quality of deal. My personal favourite was selling Diouf for 0.0m because he played for Bolton.
Absent Friend 2008
Winner: Mark Kingsbury
Without Mark WFFL does not have the same feel, gone is the tradition and methodical IBS preperation. Sorely missed but fondly remembered.
Team of the Year 2008
Winner: Temple City
A stellar 2008 for Temple City where their first title was obtained with some style. A blistering start to 08/09 mean the Bebington based team looks odds on for another title.
And now, the big one.....
Manager of the Year 2008
Winner: Matthew Temple
Back to back titles look likely for the man who took so long to break his duck, but now looks likely to dominate WFFL for years to come.
Congratulations to Matthew Temple, the greatest WFFL player in history? Vivek may have something to say about that, but its a distinct possibility.
